Lady Broncos come up short in 2008 Homecoming contest
Boyd’s Lady Broncos stepped outside of District 9-A action Saturday night to take on the Lady Feet of Webb. Webb jumped out to a big lead in the first period, but the Lady Broncos fought their way back only to fall 66-54 at Boyd Christian. The Lady Broncos are now 3-14 on the year.
Turnovers were a problem for both teams in the opening period, but it didn’t stop the Lady Feet from posting 19 points in the period. Zola Quao hit Webb’s first 10 points. Virginia Prater netted four points for Boyd and just before the period ended Katie Sain hit from the paint, as the Lady Broncos trailed 19-6 by the end of the period. Boyd turned the ball over seven times, while Webb gave the ball up five times.
Webb continued to extend its lead in the second period. Quao once again got the Lady Feet off to a good start with back-to-back baskets. Sain answered for the Lady Broncos and with 4:39 left in the first half Kelcy Tate hit a 3-pointer. Callie Vaughn answered for Webb with her own basket from behind the arc. Emily Newby hit a 3-pointer for Boyd. Another 3-pointer from Vaughn put the Lady Feet out in front 37-15 with 1:08 left on the clock. Boyd closed out the half with five unanswered points coming from Sain and Prater, but Webb held a 37-20 advantage by the half.
In the third period the Lady Broncos tried to keep the game close with the help of six points from Prater, five from Sain and a basket from Tate. But the Lady Feet kept the ball in the hands of Elizabeth Lawrence and Quao who combined for 15 of Webb’s 17 points in the period, which helped their team to take a 54-33 lead into the final period.
The Lady Feet turned the ball over four times during the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. The Lady Broncos took advantage of the mistakes, as Sain, Prater, Danna Wells and Cassie Wanamaker hit to pull their team within 11 points with 2:07 left to play. Tate added a 3-pointer and Prater added a basket during the final minute. But Webb secured the victory from the free throw line down the stretch hitting six-of-eight to take the victory.
For the Lady Broncos, Prater led with 18 points. Sain had 13, Tate netted nine, Wells had four, Newby added three and Wanamaker had two points.
Webb was led by Quao’s 22 points. Lawrence had 14, Shala Mosley, Vaughn and Alyx Walker had 10 points apiece.
