What readers are saying online

What readers are saying about the federal government’s economic stimulus plan that would result in rebate checks of $600 for most individuals, $1,200 for most couples, and an additional $300 for each child:

‘This is just a feel-good fix to buy votes. If anyone in the White House or Congress wants to help, then stop shipping our jobs to China and work on gas prices!’

‘Repeal NAFTA if you want to help the American taxpayer. Bring back manufacturing jobs to this country and close the borders. Let’s get our own home in order before we start trying to fix someone else’s.’

‘I’d buy a tank of gas for my Silverado.’

What one reader is saying about the use of Tasers by McMinnville police officers:

‘As with all police force, it should be used with restraint. By the time the officer figures out all the above listed requirements, it may too late. He may be in a fight for his life.

In most use-of-force situations, officers must make a split-second decision as to what level of force is required to subdue the suspect and to protect themselves. This policy looks to be too restrictive to me.’

What readers are saying about the Tennessee Senate’s vote, 24-6, to allow people to carry guns in bars. State Sen. Steve Roller did not vote on the measure, and received negative feedback for that decision from Sam Allen in a letter to the editor. The measure must still be approved by the House.

‘I do not know Mr. Roller, but I do know he is new to his job, has to be briefed on issues and needs to take the temperature of his district. This vote came up before he could do this, and yes, I think the folks back home are divided on this issue. I truly can see both sides, and admit I don’t know what the answer is. Just because the majority of senators went with it doesn’t make it right. Bad thinking on your part, Mr. Allen. I think if you really admitted the truth, the main reason for your letter is that Mr. Roller is not a Republican, and you are. We don’t need finger pointing from either party. We need to be working together. This city, county and country is in real bad shape and a large part of the fault is people putting themselves and their party ahead of their country. If all we can do is bite and devour one another, we’re doomed!’

‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘

‘Mr. Allen I agree with you. He should have voted one way or the other.’

‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘

‘Gloom and doom. Would his vote have made a difference on the outcome? Maybe Sen. Roller acted rightly by staying out of it if not informed enough to vote. Maybe he should have taken a stand. The way I see it, he did take a stand. His stand was to stay out of it. And for the record, I am a Republican.’
