Lady Broncos dealt lopsided district defeat
The Lady Broncos’ high school basketball team traveled to Murfreesboro Tuesday night for a District 9-A matchup with Middle Tennessee Christian.
The Cougars’ Amy Mullins turned in a game-high 35-point night to help her team down the Lady Broncos 82-14.
The Lady Broncos had their hands full during the opening period of play. The Lady Cougars put 37 points on the board, with baskets from Katie Dunn, Samantha Barrett, Kate Mullins, Lindsey Lee and Amy Mullins’ 16 points in the period. Boyd had very few opportunities on offense, but Virginia Prater, Danna Wells and Cassie Wanamaker managed to hit for one basket each. Middle Tennessee held a 37-6 lead by the end of the first period.
Things didn’t get any better for the Lady Broncos in the second quarter, as Boyd was held scoreless. Amy Mullins once again led the charge for the Lady Cougars as she netted nine points. Dunn struck for six, while Barrett, Kate Mullins and Lee added one basket each. By the end of the first half three Lady Cougars had already scored in double digits, with Amy Mullins netting 25 points. MTCS held a 58-6 lead at the break.
In the third period Prater netted four points, which would be all the Lady Broncos would manage. The Lady Cougars added 14 points to the board and extended their lead to 72-10 by the end of the period.
Newby struck for a basket in the fourth period and Prater added two points when she hit a pair of free throws. Katie Dunn and Kate Mullins hit a 3-pointer each for the Lady Cougars and Amy Mullins closed out the scoring with a pair of buckets as MTCS rolled to a 68-point victory.
For the Lady Broncos, Prater hit for eight, Newby, Wells and Wanamaker had two points each.
Amy Mullins led all scorers with 35, followed by Dunn’s 16, Kate Mullins had 12, Lee hit for 10, Barrett struck for seven and Lili Vaught added two points.
The Lady Broncos are scheduled to be at home on Saturday to take on Webb.
