Firing coach Harris done
To the Editor:
I would like to thank Rob Nunley for his article about Warren County sports. It does make you wonder who is actually in charge. It’s a shame a few people in this county can have such a big impact on the lives of others. The firing of coach Donnie Harris does not stop at the desk of James Bennett. It goes much deeper.
This firing is the result of a couple of former coaches and a few school board members who have a grudge against coach Chris Madewell. When coach Madewell was hired four years ago, the former coaches got their egos hurt when he didn’t ask them for advice to help run his program. The school board members got mad at him when he didn’t make their kids superstars.
Coach Madewell has proven he knows how to run a winning program and didn’t need former coaches or board members telling him how to do things or what players to play.
James Bennett and Andy Jacobs are just pawns of this group. They have constantly complained and have been on Bennett to do something about coach Madewell. They couldn’t fire coach Madewell because he is the coach that broke the 39-game losing streak, been to the playoffs three years in a row, and has taught these young men more than football. He has tried to teach them about honor, integrity, and character. That’s more than can be said about the men mentioned above.
They have constantly given coach Madewell directives each year and have fired his assistant coach in hope Madewell will get mad and quit. Instead of worrying about how much creditability the football coaches have, they need to look in the mirror and examine themselves and the other sports programs at the high school.
We, as a community, have got to stand up and let our voices be heard. We need to call the school board members, principal and athletic director and let them know how we feel. This football program is heading in the right direction. Coach Madewell has put a team on the field that is competitive and has credibility. He has brought pride back to Warren County. Let’s keep it that way.
