Lady Pioneers split first two games at Overton Tourney-WCHS boys drop opening game at Franklin
The Lady Pioneers picked up their second victory of the holiday break Friday night, rolling over Maplewood 58-43 in the losers’ bracket of the Overton Christmas Tournament in Nashville.
Brittany Frazier led the way with 16 points, including four 3-pointers, as Warren County’s girls got back to .500 for the season at 6-6.
Warren County jumped out to an early lead, and carried a 15-6 advantage out of the first quarter. Production slowed in the second, however, with just seven points, while Maplewood posted 12 to trim the gap to 22-18 by halftime.
The second half belonged to the Lady Pioneers, however, as they out-scored their foes 15-10 in the third quarter and 21-15 over the game’s final stanza to secure the win.
Brooke Bowman had a big night for WCHS as well, scoring 15 points, while Miki Rogers had seven. Taylor Douglas, Tessa King, Taylor Nunley and Sarah Roller added seven apiece.
Maplewood’s Camille Rucker scored 21 points, while Taeka Sweatt had seven.
The win moved the Lady Pioneers into Saturday’s fifth-place game, where they were to take on Pope John Paul II.
Warren County fell into the tournament losers’ bracket Thursday, as they were soundly defeated in the opening round by Hillsboro, 71-43.
Down 25-15 after a period, the Lady Pioneers trailed 47-23 after a quarter and 69-32 heading into a fourth quarter which allowed the Lady Burros to clear their bench and hold on despite scoring just two points in the quarter.
Miki Rogers led the WCHS scoring effort with 11 points, while Frazier had 10 and Lara Kate Haley scored six.
Five Hillsboro players scored in double figures, led by 17 points from Jessica Small and 13 apiece from Isabelle Harrison and Jessica Pace. Dee Dee Harrison and Vacie Perry added 10 apiece.
‘ On the Pioneers’ side of the ledger, Warren County’s boys fell short in their opening-round matchup at the Franklin Tournament, losing to Ravenwood by a 60-47 final.
Keith Morris paced the Raptors with a 25-point game, as Ravenwood led 10-4 after a quarter, only to trail the Pioneers 33-32 heading into the fourth. The Raptors surged ahead over the game’s final period, however, out-scoring the Pioneer boys by 14 points over the last eight minutes.
WCHS, which fell to 3-9 with the loss, was led by 19 points from Donta Weir while Chris Weitzel had 10. Camron Bond and P.L. Prater scored seven apiece.
Ravenwood’s Ricky Fletcher added 11 to his team’s cause, while Michael Becker scored 10.
The Pioneers and Lady Pioneers will return home Friday night, for a district doubleheader against Riverdale.
