Broncos, Lady ‘Cats win at Lodge Tourney-Boyd wins opener vs. N. Grundy
The sixth annual Warren Masonic Lodge 125 Christmas Elementary Basketball Tournament kicked off Thursday night in the Charlie Dalton gym.
This year’s tournament format is a round-robin match up, with four teams taking the court in the boys’ bracket.
The Boyd Broncos took on Grundy County North in their opening game as Boyd had little trouble by downing the Warriors 54-18.
Grayson Woods laid in the first basket of the game. J.T. Morgan followed with back-to-back buckets and Kaleb Tilton added a basket as Boyd hit for eight unanswered points. Tyler McClore hit two buckets for the Warriors, but Tilton closed out the period with a runner in the paint to give Boyd a 10-4 lead at the half.
The Broncos would put another nine straight unanswered points on the board to open the second period. Tilton and Morgan had baskets from the paint, while Woods, Aaron Taylor and Logan Walker hit from the free-throw line. Canyon King hit the first bucket in the period for the Warriors at the 2:11 mark.
Woods grabbed an offensive rebound and netted a basket, while Justin Wilson, Kaleb Rymer and Tilton closed out the half for the Broncos with one basket each to give their team a 27-8 lead at the break.
Boyd’s offense continued to roll in the third quarter. Woods opened the period with a 3-pointer. Walker, Logan McCormack and Taylor helped Boyd to run off 10 straight points. Garrett Hobbs and Robert Walker hit for two points each in the final minute of the third period for Grundy County, but Boyd’s Rymer closed out the third quarter with a jumper in the paint to help his team to a 41-12 advantage.
Walker scored seven straight points for the Broncos to open the final period of play, including a 3-pointer. The Warriors found a little spark from Jacob Campbell who nailed back-to-back 3-pointers, but that would be all Grundy County would get. The Broncos closed out the game with baskets from Taylor, Wilson and Brody Fernandez to take the 36 point victory.
For the Broncos, Walker led with 11 points. Tilton and Woods had nine points each. Morgan added six, Taylor had five, Rymer, Wilson and McCormack had four points apiece, and Fernandez added two points.
Campbell had six points for the Warriors. McClore had four, Colby Newsome, King and Walker had two points each.
