2007 TOP 10 STORIES OF THE YEAR-Cooper voted biggest story ahead of Winkler

The legal troubles and retirement of former state Sen. Jerry Cooper topped the Standard’s list of top 10 stories for 2007 in somewhat surprising fashion.

Cooper edged out the trial of Mary Winkler, a trial that drew national attention and even led to an ‘Oprah Winfrey Show’ appearance for Winkler.

All nine Standard newsroom employees voted on the Top 10 stories, along with publisher Patricia Zechman. A 10 was given to the story of greatest significance, followed by a 9 for the No. 2 story, and so on.

With 10 people participating, a 100 is the top score if a story received all 10 first-place votes. Cooper finished with 86 points, followed by Winkler with 83.
