Creamed by Coffee-Lady Pioneers’ winning streak comes to an end

The Lady Pioneers’ early winning streak came to an abrupt end Tuesday night, with a lopsided 78-48 loss to the visiting Lady Red Raiders of Coffee County High School.

Scoring runs in the opening minutes of the game’s first three quarters were key for the Lady Raiders, who handed WCHS its first regular-season loss, dropping the Lady Pioneer record to 3-1.

Led by 15-point nights from both Sarah Beth Elam and Cortney Page, the Lady Raiders out-scored their hosts 10-0 to begin the game, building a lead which would be trimmed only slightly as they went into the second ahead 20-13.

Elam sparked a 7-0 run to open the second quarter, once again putting her squad ahead by double figures, and Warren County was held without a field goal for the final 2:26 of the first half, which ended with Manchester holding a comfortable 34-21 lead.

Miki Rogers ‘ who finished as Warren County’s top scorer with nine points ‘ led off the second half with a 3-pointer. But the Raiders responded with a 10-0 run, going up by 20 points at 44-24 and never looking back. The third quarter ended with CCHS holding a 58-37 lead, and Jenna Philpot scored eight of her 14 points down the stretch to help the Raiders expand that lead to as many as 31 before the game’s final horn.

Taylor Nunley, Brooke Bowman and Douglas scored seven points apiece for the Lady Pioneers, while Tessa King added five. Coffee County got eight each from Jamie Harden and Paige Odom to help them on their way to the victory.

The District 7-AAA schedule begins when the Lady Pioneers next take to the floor, as they’ll be off until their Dec. 7 home game against Blackman.
