Riverdale reigns over WCHS-Early lead sets tone in Warriors’ win over boys

A 33-point first quarter was all Riverdale needed Monday night as the Warriors’ freshman team defeated the Pioneers 75-55 in the Charlie Dalton gym. The Pioneer squad dropped to 1-1 on the season.

Nine players scored in the opening period for the Warriors as Cedrick Williams connected for six points. B.J. Nowlin and Chris Bruce hit 3-pointers and Mike Smith added a pair of baskets. The Pioneers struggled to keep up with the much quicker Riverdale squad. Jalen Mount scored seven points for the Pioneers, while Tylan Martin and Caleb Northcutt added one basket each, but by the end of the period Warren County trailed 33-11.

Warren County did a better job of controlling the tempo of the game in the second period, which held the Warriors to 16 points. The Pioneers put 17 points on the board with baskets from Robert Harris, Hunter Dye and Martin. By the end of the first half Riverdale held a 49-28 lead.

Warren County opened the third period with back-to-back buckets from Dye and Martin. But Riverdale answered with four straight points. Martin connected on a 3-pointer with 2:34 left in the period. Riverdale answered once again with nine straight points including a 3-pointer from Chris Gutierrez. The Pioneers scored two more buckets before the buzzer, but the Riverdale still held a 24 point advantage.

Final period action saw Riverdale add to its lead with a 12 point quarter. Warren County made a run midway through the period scoring nine straight points, but it was too little too late as the Warriors cruised to victory.

For the Pioneers, Martin led with 18 points. Mount and Dye added 10 points each. Harris and Northcutt had six points apiece. Hayden Wood and Cameron Moore added two points each.

Williams had 12, T.J. Chesterfield had 10, Chris Bruce and Dominique Coleman had nine points apiece to lead the Warriors.
