Radio Shack not leaving mall

Our local Radio Shack at Three Star Mall is not one of the 400 to 700 stores scheduled to be closed by the company. That?s some refreshing news for a change.

In last week?s column I talked about the possibility of Radio Shack leaving Three Star Mall after reading a report that the company plans to close 400 to 700 of its stores.

I?m now pleased to announce the local store has no plans to close, according to Radio Shack.

?We?ve had a conference meeting and no stores in this district are closing,? said Frank Rojas, the assistant manager at our Radio Shack. ?This district has about 20 stores and none of them are closing.?

That?s great to hear because I like shopping at Radio Shack and think it?s a valuable addition to the mall. The store has always seemed to do a solid business and that?s something Rojas confirmed.

This district includes Radio Shack stores in towns such as Chattanooga, Cleveland, Cookeville, Tullahoma and Shelbyville.

As for Radio Shack as a whole, the company still plans to shut down 400 to 700 stores and two distribution centers in Charleston, S.C. and Southhaven, Miss. The two distribution centers that will be closed will impact 88 employees.

And for your information, there are nearly 7,000 Radio Shack stores operated by the company or dealers, and more than 700 wireless kiosks. There are also more than 100 stores in Mexico.
