Clemons celebrates 99th birthday

CLEMONS
Nettie Clemons observed a milestone Dec. 31 as she celebrated her 99th birthday in a gathering of friends and family in the dining room of NHC HealthCare.

She was born Dec. 28, 1906 to J.N. (Jim) and Elizabeth Savage Hobbs. In 1923, at the age of 17, she married Thomas Lee Clemons while sitting in a buggy at the crossroads at Irving College. The pair are the parents of three sons, Leonard, J.C. and Lannie. They have five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Clemons has since passed away.

Mrs. Nettie’s goal was to receive 99 birthday cards on the big day, and the goal was achieved. Approximately 105 guests, many from out of town, made a point to congratulate her on her achievement. Guests included childhood friends, neighbors, family members and church family members from Bybee Branch Church of Christ and Westwood Church of Christ. She has been a Christian for 79 years.

During the 99 years of Mrs. Nettie’s life, she witnessed the first Model T automobile, the beginning of World War I, the escapades of the famous outlaws Bonnie and Clyde, the start of the Korean and Vietnam Wars and remembers 18 of the 43 Presidents in office.

Mrs. Nettie can truthfully say about any problems or hardships we face today, “Been there ? done that!”
