Relay for Life set for Friday
This week, as decisions are finalized, more than 50 teams are gearing up to participate in the signature fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. Carole Cathcart and Doug Lott, co-chairs for the 2005 Warren County Relay for Life, have been meeting with other committee members since late 2004 in an effort to surpass last year’s total.
The first year’s efforts raised $72,000. Last year, Relay for Life generated $96,000 for cancer research, education, advocacy, and patient services.
This year’s event is this Friday, June 3 at the middle school track beginning at 6 p.m. and continuing throughout the evening until 6 a.m. June 4. The evening will get under way with the first lap being taken by cancer survivors. They are also invited to the survivor reception which is a courtesy provided through the sponsorship of Moore Properties and Security Federal Bank.
Although Cathcart stresses the major monetary resources are generated throughout the year as teams hold fundraisers, a substantial amount of money will be raised throughout the night and into the early morning.
“What this means is that even though you are not a member of any Relay team, certainly we extend an invitation to the public as a whole to come and enjoy the evening with your family as lots of delicious food and entertainment for children will be available,” Cathcart said.
The luminaria ceremony, which honors survivors and pays tribute to the memory of those lost to this disease, will begin at 10 p.m.
