Higher taxes, fewer benefits not right Social Security fix

I am writing in response to a recent guest editorial by Lincoln Davis. His dizzying explanation of how to fix Social Security makes as much sense to me as this partisan liberal having the given name of our great Republican 16th president, Abraham Lincoln.
With all due respect, Davis is in his third year in Congress and his editorial is the first time he has attempted to enlighten us on an issue. Warren County voters, and indeed the 4th Congressional District, must know by now that they sent a politically neutered representative to Washington to do nothing but obstruct in a Republican Congress with a Republican president.
This great forum will not permit me the space to counter all the broad brush Democrat playbook statements made by Rep. Davis, but let me give you a few facts in defense of President Bush.
The first rattle out of the box is Davis was deceptive in insinuating President Bush wanted to dismantle Social Security. Nothing could be further from the truth. First, the president did not present a plan to fix Social Security. He said unless something is done soon, Social Security will not meet its commitment around the year 2042. Pat Robinson says 2018. The actuaries say 2042, and the Democrats say 2050. Take your pick.
The president presented some solutions for a bipartisan debate such as volunteer personal savings account for people under 50 invested in the market which the Democrats demagogue as privatizing Social Security. I don’t know what part of the word volunteer they don’t understand.
Davis wants us to believe there is no problem and we should do nothing until 2050 or whatever, and at that time we simply raise taxes and cut benefits. Very easy. Not to worry.
After reading our long-time, no-see representative’s column, you find he is for private investments, a lot of shoulda, woulda, and coulda’s and simply fixing Social Security by raising payroll taxes and cutting benefits.
