Social Security concerns addressed today on radio
Public radio station WCPI, 91.3 FM will be featuring longtime Social Security district manager Jim Glenn, now retired, on its “Viewpoints, the View from Here” program, with co-hosts Bill Zechman and Thomas Vaughn.
The program will discuss President Bush’s proposed changes to the Social Security system.
Glenn, who stressed his comments are his personal views since he is no longer affiliated with the Social Security office, said he will be discussing ways for retirees to supplement their Social Security and prepare for retirement. He also wanted to ease fears about the future of the Social Security system. One of Bush’s proposals is to privatize the program and invest the money in funds that are tied to the stock market, something Glenn said has become a worry for some.
“A lot of people are really scared, saying they don’t want their benefits to be lost in the stock market,” Glenn said. But Glenn said these fears are basically unfounded since representatives will watch the situation closely and make sure the program is protected.
“Really, people don’t have to worry,” Glenn said. “There are 435 people in the House of Representatives and they’re representing the people, and for years they have said we’re not going to do anything to hurt Social Security. They’re going to basically hold to that I think.”
