Reopening the proper move for animal shelter

Reopening the proper move for animal shelter
It’s refreshing to see Humane Society officials put aside their differences with the county and agree to reopen the animal shelter this Monday.

If the Humane Society is concerned about what’s best for Warren County, it’s the right move to make.

The Standard is pleased such a decision was finally reached. In an editorial last Sunday, the newspaper was critical of the Humane Society for not reopening the shelter sooner. Now that a decision has been made to do exactly that, the paper is more than happy to recognize the Humane Society for acting in the best interest of the county. We only hope the turmoil which has seemed to follow around the animal shelter like a lost puppy can be put in the past.

For years and years, the animal shelter has been an underfunded operation. The need for money has always scratched at the door.

Now much of that has changed. The Warren County Commission generously agreed to give $80,000 a year to the Humane Society. All the county asked for in return was a little oversight on how such a sizable sum was being spent.

It was not an unreasonable request. It’s not realistic to expect $80,000 in taxpayer dollars with no guidelines in place to monitor how such money is used.

The important thing to remember is the county and the Humane Society both want the same thing. They want to control the animal population in this county. They want a facility where animals can be adopted. They don’t want packs of stray dogs roaming free.

With the animal shelter scheduled to open again Monday, those goals can be attained.

Differences aside, opening the shelter is exactly what should happen.
