Ida Davenport given coveted Book of Golden Deeds

“You won’t hear bells and whistles from this lady,” said Randy England in presenting the award. “She is always quiet, subdued and usually in the background of most activities. But the things she does for her community and church speak louder than any of these things. She strives daily to show dedication and commitment to God and his work.”
A member of Cornerstone Baptist Church for 15 years, she has been very involved in the mission activities of her church and is known “to go the extra mile” to meet any need presented to her. She has organized and cooked food for the Easter meal at Spangler and Beersheba towers.
“She is truly a Christian model for modesty and generosity,” England said. “As a Sunday School teacher, VBS worker and Women’s Missionary Union leader, she does not wait until the needs of the people come to her. She goes out and looks for them and makes an effort to help change them for the better.”
The Book of Golden Deeds included many letters praising Davenport’s work in the community, including one from Don Roberts with McMinnville Housing Authority’s Resident Activity Center. Roberts said Davenport has faithfully come to the center on Monday nights to help serve children living in public housing.
“She is one of the most caring individuals you will ever want to know,” Roberts wrote. “You can depend on Ms. Ida, as she is known by the kids at the activity center.”
The book also included a letter from state Sen. Jerry Cooper, praising her work in the community.
“You have continually exhibited a caring spirit for the people of Warren County,” Cooper wrote. “Your service to others has helped touch the lives of many and we consider ourselves very fortunate to have an individual of your integrity as part of our community.”
Davenport is the daughter of James and Neva Jean Whiteaker. She is married to her husband of 39 years, Bobby, and they reside on Southside Drive. They have five children, Bobby Jr., Leah Honeycutt, James Davenport, Curtis Davenport, all of McMinnville, and the late Donnie Davenport. They have six grandchildren, Joshua, Daniel, Cassandra and Jasmine Davenport, and Lindsey and Lacey Honeycutt.
In addition to the Book of Golden Deeds, the club presented its annual Community Service Award to George Argo, Jr.
In receiving the award, Argo was praised for his work with the PTO at Irving College where a new computer lab has been built largely due to Argo’s help. Argo was also cited for his help with Habitat for Humanity where he donated numerous volunteer hours.
A third honor was also issued Tuesday night when Charles Bogle was named Exchangite of the Year. Bogle was praised for his contributions in the club’s flag program and as the club’s bulletin editor.
