Bernie’s teams sweep dart league’s first titles

The inaugural season of the Mid-Tennessee Dart Association came to a close Wednesday night, with awards presented to the new league’s winners and a hefty donation presented to a local charity.

The MTDA began as the idea of Bernie’s Sports Grill owners Dwayne and Bernadette Doud, and was brought together by Doug Gillentine and Dicky Lee.

“I thought we had a pretty successful league,” said Gillentine, who served as the organization’s president. “Dwayne came to me and Dicky with the idea, and we started putting things together. Nine days later we were playing.

“We didn’t have long to organize things, but overall we had a good league, a good turnout and everybody had a good time.”

When organizing the league, team captains agreed the winning squads in its two divisions would donate their prize money to the charity of the team’s choice.

Teams sponsored by Bernie’s wound up claiming the championship in both the “A” and “B” divisions, and chose to donate their winnings to Kids of the Community.

The league added more money to the donation, and members from other teams padded the winning funds to a total of $500, which was presented at Wednesday’s awards banquet.

Jason Crawford, who represented Kids of the Community in accepting the donation, expressed his organization’s gratitude.

“It’s a struggle for us every day to try and provide for these kids, and it really brings a huge smile to my face to see people in the community come together like this and help us.”

The “A” division champions were captained by Brad Davenport, and consisted of Dwayne and Bernadette Doud, Scott Reagan, Jeremy Finchum and Rob Nunley.

The “B” division winners were captained by Charles Walker, and were made up of Jeff Phillips, Rick Powers, Mark Browning, Albert Johnson and Terry Childress.

Plans are already underway for the association’s fall league, with sign-ups scheduled to begin in early August and play to begin Sept. 1. For information on joining the league, contact Gillentine at 473-7272 or Doug Lott at 473-8901.
