Underage beer sales aggravate officials

The operation, which was reported in last Sunday’s edition of the Southern Standard and listed the alleged offenders, led the county commission to delay acting on the transfer of a beer license Monday since the petitioning business, Country Club Market, was one of those cited. Commissioner Bill Zechman brought the newspaper article to the commission’s attention early in the meeting.
“In this instance, we are going to hold off on this request until we hear from the court whether that seller was found guilty,” said Safety Committee chairperson Sally Brock. “If indeed the seller was found guilty, then the Safety Committee will meet and hold a hearing to determine whether or not this establishment, and the other establishments that have the same problem, can keep their license.”
After the meeting, Brock talked about how the citations would be handled. Since first offenses generally don’t result in revocation, Brock said the Safety Committee would have to do some research before making any kind of decision.
“I don’t know right off the top of my head which ones are first-timers or not,” she said. “So we have to find that out first of all. And then it’s my understanding the Safety Committee can meet and review all these and can do some revoking if it’s not the first time.”
Brock also said it really made no difference whether it was an employee or the actual business owner making the sale. “The owner of the business is responsible for their employees,” Brock said. “That’s just a fact of life.
Once guilt is determined in court, County Executive Kenneth Rogers said it would be up to the Safety Committee to meet and make recommendations in each case.
