Eagles hold off WCMS

After a hard fought tournament, Morrison and Warren County Middle School had to settle for the boys’ consolation game Monday night. Morrison’s solid first-half performance gave the Eagles the 36-27 victory.

The first period was a low-scoring event. The Pioneers had several shots that just wouldn’t fall and as a result Cameron Smith had WCMS’s only two points in the period. Morrison was a little slow out of the gate also, as Dustin Holland, Charlie Hennessee and Casey Dunn combined for six points to give the Eagles the first-quarter lead.

In the second period both teams heated up from the floor. Smith got things going for Warren County with a 3-pointer, but Morrison answered back with baskets from Bobby Fults and Hennessee. By the end of the half Morrison held on to a 18-12 lead.

Only three players scored for the Pioneers in the third period. Smith once again hit a 3 and Coty Keel and Paul Lawson Prater added one basket each. Morrison worked the paint with Hennessee, Dunn and Zach West to extend its lead to 29-19 by the end of the period.

In the final period WCMS had a chance to close the gap from the free-throw line, but the Pioneers hit just 6-of-13 and had only eight points in the period. Morrison kept hitting form the floor with Fults, Holland and Hennessee scoring in the final period for the Morrison win.

Leading the way for Morrison was Hennessee with 12 points, while Fults hit for eight, Dustin Holland had seven, Dunn had four, West hit for three and Jake Perry added two points.

For WCMS, Smith led with 11 points, Prater had six, Keel and Courtney Blevins had four points each and Alex Lanier added two points.
