Blackman coach guest speaker for African-American banquet

The 2004 African-American Athletic and Scholarship Banquet will be held Feb. 28 at McMinnville Civic Center.

To be honored at the ninth annual event will be all local African-American athletes, including team managers, who participate in school or Jaycee sports, as well as cheerleaders, band members and Pioneerettes. Also to be honored are all African-American members of this year’s graduating class.

Keith Dean, head coach of Murfreesboro Blackman High School’s boys and girls track team, and assistant coach of its girls basketball team, will be the banquet’s guest speaker.

Another highlight will be the presentation of the Christopher Todd Boyd Memorial Scholarships. Over the past eight years, this scholarship fund has provided $20,000 to local African-American students.

The African-American Athletic and Scholarship Banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for non-athletic students and children over 4. The public is invited.

Deadline for registration is Feb. 22. To register, contact banquet coordinator Donna Martin at 473-6198 or donnafmartin@blomand.net. Tickets can also be purchased at Silver Scissors Hair Salon.
