Traditional calendar most popular choice

If results from a public survey are any indication, Warren County residents heavily favor a traditional school calendar over a 45-10 or 45-15 schedule.

The unscientific survey was conducted by the Warren County Education Association at the school board’s request to gauge public opinion on the school calendar issue. Copies of the survey, which asked participants to rank their calendar preferences, were sent home with students. The survey was also printed in the Standard.

Results of the survey are as follows: 1,787 were in favor of a traditional calendar, 944 were in favor of a 45-10 calendar; and 486 were in favor of a 45-15 calendar.

County teachers were also surveyed on the issue for a third time recently. Unlike the first two surveys, more teachers (205) favored a traditional calendar than 45-10 (187) or 45-15 (46).

The two previous surveys found teachers to favor a 45-10 calendar. Teachers were surveyed again, it was said, because many of them were under the impression school board members had already made up their minds to adopt an alternative calendar and voted for a 45-10 calendar because they saw it as the lesser of two evils. School board members deny having already made a decision.

A 45-10 calendar is preferred, however, by county principals and school staff members, according to a recent school board survey of those individuals. Results of that survey are 228 in favor of 45-10, 191 in favor of traditional, and 48 in favor of 45-15.
