Buying Findlay building is county’s best option
As county government officials and the county’s Industrial Development Board continue to hammer away at plans to purchase the former Findlay building, there has been some concern that Warren County should not extend its hand to help a private business expand.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
As clearly stated in today’s front-page story, the county has a history of bending over backwards to lure potential industry inside Warren County’s borders. In fact most cities and counties make great financial concessions to attract new businesses and therefore bring new jobs.
There’s no reason Warren County shouldn’t do the same thing for Morrison Tool & Fab as it seeks to expand its workforce and inject some long-awaited new jobs into our local economy.
Just because Morrison Tool & Fab is already in operation – and Warren County is not in a bidding battle to have it locate here – doesn’t mean we should shrug off the company’s need for assistance. Jobs are jobs and that’s especially noteworthy when talking about 225 of them.
It also brings up the question about the role government should play in our lives. First and foremost we want our government to work for us.
On the national level, we expect military protection and smooth highways on which to drive, to name two items. On the local level, we expect our elected officials to take action which will help our families and our community prosper.
One of the most basic of our community needs is jobs.
It’s jobs that put food on the table, clothes on our back and a cell phone in our hand. It’s jobs that enable us to buy nice gifts for Christmas.
Sure we want local government to fund education and build a few parks, but we don’t want to spend all day in those parks because we don’t have a job.
The bottom line is this county needs to find some way – any way – to land good-paying jobs for Warren countians. And that’s exactly what county officials are working toward in their effort to purchase the former Findlay building for Morrison Tool & Fab’s expansion. They have a plan to provide jobs for local people – without having to raise taxes.
So where’s the problem?
At last look, companies aren’t exactly fighting at the county line for the opportunity to locate in Warren County. It doesn’t appear companies are fighting anywhere for that right.
Since no new industry appears to be coming in, and several industries have recently made their way out, our elected officials are doing what they can and that’s helping an existing industry expand to provide new jobs for our citizens.
From our point of view, this is nothing but a positive move for Warren County.
