Union Planters atop Babe Ruth standings

Union Planters held on to its lead in the 13-14 year-old Babe Ruth league with a pair of victories this week.

After scoring a 13-4 win over Rotary earlier in the week, the league leaders captured a narrow victory in a “battle of the banks,” edging First National 12-11.

Against Rotary, Andrew King, Brandon Boyd, Elliot Kelley and Steven Richardson had a hit apiece, while Bryan Bouldin got the win on the mound.

Jody Denney took the loss for Rotary Club, which got three hits from J.R. Drake. Drake was a home run away from hitting for the cycle, as he came in with a single, a double and a triple.

Justin Armes got the win for Union Planters against First National, as they came out on top of a slugfest.

Brandon Boyd, Tyler Young and Wes Williams had two hits each in the winning effort, while Bryan Bouldin, Nigel Hopkins and Steven Richardson came through with a base hit apiece.

Jordan Powers had four hits to lead the way for First National in the tough-luck loss. Matt Shields connected for a pair of base knocks, while Alex Self and Tony Grissom had a hit apiece.

In other action from the 13-14 league, Sundrop scored an 8-2 win over Central Oil behind the strong pitching of Coty Grissom, who worked five innings and struck out seven Central Oil batters. Dexter Hillis had two hits, while Jacob Fann and Drew Green had one each for the winning side. Jordan Underhill took the loss for Central Oil.

Charter Communications got a seven-strikeout performance from Dillon Childers as they came away with an 8-2 win over Central Oil. Childers and Alan McCormack had a hit apiece to help the winning cause.

Buzz Crowder took the loss for Central, and came through with a hit, as did Jordan Underhill, Tyler Grandstaff and Terrin Martin.

Sundrop was a 10-6 winner over Rotary Club, as Todd Dunn picked up the win on the mound and helped his own cause with a pair of hits. Jacob Fann also connected for Sundrop. Jonathan Roberts, Wes Johnson and Jon Creek had one hit each for Rotary.

Central Oil got back on the winning track later in the week, scoring a 12-5 decision over Rotary Club. Tyler Grandstaff and Henry Hall had two hits each, and Cody Brown had another base hit to help his own cause on the pitcher’s mound.

Jody Denney and Evan Moran had two hits each for Rotary, and Ricky Curtis had another as Moran took the loss on the mound.
