Armed Forces Day celebrated
Crowds braved chilly 50 degree weather Saturday to observe the Armed Forces Day celebration sponsored by the Evening Exchange Club. The program featured a History of the Flag Ceremony presented by Boy Scout Troop 309, and a performance from the Calliope Woodwind Quintet from WCHS.
Guest speakers Colonel Craig Christen and McMinnville native Colonel Terry “Max” Haston followed with inspiring tributes to the men and women currently serving in the armed forces across the nation and around the globe. Both men noted the increased importance of those men and women in light of the events of September 11 and the ongoing fight against international terrorism.
Closing out the event was a spirited performance by the Warren County Pioneerettes Dance and Drill Team.
Also on hand downtown was the Mini Standard’s Bonnie Bear greeting fundraisers rallying around the statue of Hebe.
Awards were given to the winning essays from local students on why they felt Hebe should be saved and money was collected from the various schools who participated in the fundraising drive to restore the venerable statue.
Excerpts from the Armed Forces Day Ceremony will air on public radio station WCPI, 91.3 FM, today at 3 p.m.
