Pioneers dealt district setback at Cookeville
COOKEVILLE — Warren County knocked Cookeville’s starting pitcher out of Thursday’s game, but his replacement knocked the Pioneers out of a chance for a district win.
With WCHS on top 4-2, Jason Cobb came on in relief for the Cavaliers, allowing just three hits over the final four innings of a 7-4 Cookeville win.
The Pioneers, who fell to 5-3 in District 7-AAA play with the loss, plated a run in the first when Daniel Owens doubled home Glenn Rogers, who had reached on a two-out error.
The Cavaliers’ Todd Martin answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning, however, tying the game at 1-1.
Derek Kennamer came through with a two-run single in the second, and scored on a Zach Pelham double to put the Pioneers up 4-1, but a leadoff walk and two hits resulted in another Cookeville run in the bottom half of the frame.
Cookeville’s Trevor Mickey reached on an error to start the Cavalier fourth, and a single by Jeremy Jones followed by a walk to Lee Williams loaded the bases for Cobb, who drove in a run with a single. Brady Adams followed with a two-run base hit, and Martin brought home Cobb with a sacrifice fly to give Cookeville a 6-4 lead.
Jones drove in Mickey with a triple in the fifth to provide the final margin of victory.
Nicholas Robinson took the loss on the mound for WCHS, allowing all seven runs and 10 hits while working the first five innings. Robinson walked just two hitters and fanned six.
Colby Jenkins pitched the sixth inning, giving up no hits and striking out one batter.
Owens, who finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, was the only Pioneer with more than one hit. Kennamer, Pelham and Cantrell had a base hit apiece.
Cobb pitched four innings of two-hit ball to get the win for Cookeville, and also provided the Cavaliers’ biggest punch at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored and a pair of RBIs.
