Upon Further Review: Memphis cans morals for money
On Monday the one thing I hoped that would never happen did. The state of Tennessee is going to shame itself and let Mike “The Thug” Tyson fight Lennox Lewis at the Pyramid on June 8 in Memphis.
OK, everybody would love to see Lewis beat Mike Tyson to a pulp, and the man sure does deserve it. But should he be allowed to step back into the ring after his many escapades over the years? The man was in prison for rape, for heaven’s sake. Assault, domestic violence, rape charges again, biting Evander Holyfield’s ear — should this really be happening?
Has society stooped so low that we would actually pay money to see this disgraceful human box? I am a boxing fan and enjoy watching a good fight, but I have to draw the line on this one.
Tyson has been given many chances to straighten up and fly right, so to speak, but has laughed in the face of every person who has given him that second chance. This man is totally out of control and thinks he is beyond the rules and laws of this country.
If this man was a doctor or lawyer and conducted himself in this manner, would he have not had his licenses revoked forever?
Money has great power, though, and this is just another case of money out-weighing values.
Millions of dollars will be made off this bout and Tyson, who is completely out of control and a total disgrace to the boxing world, is going to receive several million whether he wins or loses.
I guess the way Memphis sees it, he’s going to fight somewhere — it might as well be here. This will be a boost to the Memphis economy and should make money for the investors. I guess we all have to do things we don’t want to some times, but is that a good enough reason to support this fight? I don’t think so.
If Nevada wouldn’t let Tyson have his licenses and New Jersey said no, then everybody else should stand together and send a message to Mr. Tyson that his days as a boxer are over.
They suspend professional ball players for using drugs, and even ban them for gambling, but we can’t keep Mike Tyson out of the ring. Am I the only one who sees something wrong with this picture?
Granted some of you may think boxing is a terrible sport and this doesn’t help the image.
Boxing is a graceful art of power and speed. It is two men not just trying to beat each other to death, but two men using their gracefulness and power trying to out-think the other much like a chess match. Two men for 36 minutes, pushing their bodies to the max.
When Tyson first started boxing as a professional he was almost unstoppable. But if you are going to break the law and then never learn from your mistakes, you have to be penalized for your actions. Tyson says he’s sorry every time he gets in trouble, but turns around and gets right back in the same boat. It’s time he stands on his own two feet and pays for his evil temper.
The fight will go on and more money will be made. I guess we don’t have any morals left and Tyson will go on until his anger and rage kills somebody. Lets just hope it’s not after this fight so all the people who are opposed to it can’t say “I told you so” to the state of Tennessee.
If we are willing to pay to see it, then aren’t we the ones that are responsible for letting this fight happen? What’s the magic word? MONEY.
It’s like the old saying goes, “If you build it, they will come.” And that is just what the promoters are doing for this fight. They knew if somebody would give Tyson a license, then people would pay to see it. I hope people are paying to see Lewis give Tyson a good butt-whipping.
