Broncos are off to strong start
Boyd Christian School’s soccer team survived the soggy conditions Saturday to hand Friendship Christian a 2-1 loss in a District 8-A matchup.
Both teams had trouble with the moving the ball up and down the slippery field. In the first half Boyd scored first on a break-away, with Clint Patterson finding Arne Alberts who fired a shot past the FCHS goalie to go up 1-0.
Boyd’s defense tightened up late in the first half, but with three minutes left in the period Friendship fired a shot just out of the reach of goalie Jay Medley to tie the game up at halftime 1-1.
“The wet field was making it hard to get much momentum going,” said Boyd coach Keri Hertwig. “The guys got started down field, but were having a hard time finishing off the play.
“We played very well on defense in the first half, and just have to keep focused on what we’re doing. We had eight shots on goal in the half, but we needed to have more shots at goal in the second half to win this game.”
With the field conditions deteriorating, Boyd struck early in the second half when Patterson took a pass from Alberts and drove the ball past FCHS goalie to provide the final margin of victory.
The Broncos stepped up on defense midway in the half, and kept FCHS shut down. The Broncos had 12 shots in the second period while Jay Medley turned away 15 shots in the game.
“We played very well today under difficult conditions and I’m very pleased with our effort. We kept pressure on them late in the half, and had a solid defensive performance late in the period,” said Hertwig.
Boyd is now 2-0 in district play and will play St. Andrews at home Monday at 4:30 p.m.
