WCHS soccer teams return from camp

The Warren County Lady Pioneer soccer team returned last week from a five-day camp held at Maryville College. The soccer camp is directed by Pepe Fernandez, who is the head coach of the Fighting Scots and Lady Scots soccer teams.

WCHS coach Keith Hamilton and assistant coach Alan Brownyard took the girls’ and boys’ teams to the camp, hoping to provide the squads with outstanding instruction and the opportunity to scrimmage some of the top teams in the state.

“I feel the camp was a great success and everybody took a lot of information home, including me,” said coach Hamilton. “As far as the girls’ team goes, I was hoping the camp would help bring the girls together and build some camaraderie within the team. I believe we accomplished that.

“We have several holes to fill and I was looking for several players to step up and fill those gaps. I think two of those positions were filled during the camp and that’s what I was looking for. The girls did really well up until the last day and I think everybody was getting a little tired and ready to come home. But the first four days everybody worked hard and we got a lot done. We worked on our skills in the mornings and scrimmaged two and sometimes three times a day in the afternoon.”

The official first day of practice starts Monday for the Lady Pioneers. The girls soccer team will be helping out with the Tennessee State Soccer Association camp next week, which is being held at Pistole Park. The camp runs from Aug. 2 until Aug. 6, from 5 until 8:30 p.m.

Next Saturday, Aug. 7, starting at 9:30 a.m., the Lady Pioneers will be hosting a play-day at the Warren County High School soccer field. Teams from Knoxville West Shelbyville and GPS of Chattanooga will be participating.
