Season champs fall at 9-10 tourney
Action continued in the 9- and 10-year-old Cal Ripken baseball tournament Thursday night, with four make-up games after rain canceled Tuesday’s contests.
A loss by the regular season champions highlighted Thursday’s slate of tournament games, as Rubley’s Nursery fell to Security Federal 6-1 at the Hoover and Millraney Field.
Brett Mullican worked five innings to get the win for Security Federal, giving up just two hits and one run while fanning 10 batters from the regular season champs. Grayson Woods added an inning of relief to seal the win.
Zack Rubley pitched all five innings for his squad, giving up six runs on five hits and five walks. He struck out 12 Security Federal batters in the losing effort.
Cody Parkhurst had a double and finished 2-for-3 for Security Federal, driving in three runs. Woods, Dylan Barnes and Mullican added a hit each to the winning tally.
Rubley’s only hits came from Zack Rubley and Ryne Fults, with Rubley driving in Fults for their only run.
• In other action at Hoover-Millraney, the Fulmer Brothers Yankees held on in a game suspended Tuesday night to take a 5-2 win over the West Side Auto Scrappers.
Fulmer, which was up 3-0 when play was halted Tuesday, added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth then held on after allowing two to their foes in the top of the sixth.
Micah McColloch pitched three innings, allowing no runs on just two hits while fanning two batters. Logan Walker pitched the game’s final three frames, allowing two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out five.
David Lee, McColloch and Kendall Rutledge had a hit each for the Yankees, with Rutledge driving in a pair of runs.
The Scrappers got two hits apiece from Nathan Patterson and Collin Hutchins, while Luke Hillis added another base knock. On the mound, Hillis pitched the first three innings, taking the loss, while Austin Wright worked two innings of relief.
• At the Dottie West Field, Dependable Brakes made short work of A.O. Smith, as Nelson Huckeby and Daulton Foster combined for a no-hit shutout in an 11-0 victory.
Huckeby pitched three innings, walking three batters and fanning five on his way to the win, while Foster worked the fourth, walking one batter and striking out two.
Cory Sydenstricker pitched three innings in a losing effort for A.O. Smith, while Spencer Pryor worked the fourth.
Dependable Brakes was paced at the plate by Huckeby, Justin Woodlee and Kale Beasley, who recorded two hits each. Woodlee, who had a triple in the game, drove in three runs. Other hits from Dependable came from Mac Britton, Austin Fisk, Tylan Martin and Kaleb Tilton.
• Hot Wheels downed West and Gribble Builders in another lopsided affair on the Dottie West diamond, winning 13-1 in five innings. Nick Grandey hurled a complete game to get the win, walking five and striking out eight batters. Davis Adcock pitched two innings for West and Gribble, allowing five runs on five hits, while Gage Myers gave up eight runs in three innings of relief.
Offensively for Hot Wheels, Kaleb Rymer went 2-for-3, scored two runs and drove in four with a home run to lead the way. Grandey and Logan McCormick had three hits each and both scored three runs, while Kyle White and Ethan Wilson had a hit apiece.
West and Gribble’s lone hit came from Jordan Gribble. Myers scored the team’s only run.
