Swim lessons just a stroke away

Volunteers from the Warren County chapter of the American Red Cross taught almost 600 people last year as part of its Learn to Swim program, with Kyle and Becky Phillips leading their first year as volunteer program directors.
“It was different but it worked real well,” Kyle Phillips said of his first season as director and the first year in the new pool. “We had lots of space and no one was on top of each other.”
The Red Cross is offering for sale Learn to Swim T-shirts for $10 and $12 this year, Phillips said, noting proceeds will be used to help offset costs of providing swimming instructors with new books because materials will be out of date next year.
Registration for the Learn to Swim program is scheduled for June 24 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at McMinnville Civic Center. Classes are available for ages 6 and up and are filled on an first-come basis.
The following classes are available: level one and two water exploration; level three stroke readiness; level four stroke development; level five stroke refinement; level six swimming and skill proficiency and pre-lifeguarding.
Lessons will be offered in two sessions lasting two weeks each, with the first session beginning July 5 and the second session beginning July 19.
Pre-paid T-shirt orders can be placed through July 5 and shirts will be delivered during classes. More information can be obtained by calling the Red Cross office at 473-2595 or Kyle or Becky Phillips at 939-2802.
