Boyd blasted in 8-A opener

The Lady Broncos had their hands full in the first round of the District 8-A Tournament Monday night on the road at Gordonsville.

Boyd fell to the No. 2- seeded Lady Tigers 58-18, on a night when Gordonsville used its fast-break to perfection.

Gordonsville came out of the gate fast and furious hitting everything from inside the 15-foot mark. The Lady Broncos did a good job of ball control during the first period, but the Lady Tigers didn’t allow any second-chance shoots. Boyd hit for six points in the period but Gordonsville held a 15-6 lead by the end of the quarter.

Gordonsville continued to stay hot and made good on almost every attempt.

Amanda Prater worked the boards inside, but by the end of the period the Lady Broncos had just four points in the quarter, while Gordonsville added 17 for a 32-10 lead at the break.

In the second half Boyd continued to play solid on defense but the Lady Tigers remained red-hot from the field, connecting for 16 points in the third period.

Boyd was held to five points in the third and by the end of the period Gordonsville held a 42-15 lead.

Going into the final period the quicker Gordonsville team continued to run the floor.

The Lady Broncos defense stayed in control in the halfcourt game but the Lady Tigers built their lead using the fast-break, adding 10 points in the period as Boyd struck for just three.

Leading the Lady Broncos was Prater with 13 points and five rebounds. Jennifer Laxton and Tabitha King had two points each and Tenara Jones added one point. Boyd had just eight offensive rebounds on the night.

For Gordonsville, Jessie Winfree and Jessie Willoughby had 10 points each to lead the Lady Tigers. Gordonsville had two 3’s on the night.
