June 7-9: Frist Center announces summer art camps

NASHVILLE — The Frist Center for the Visual Arts will present its annual Summer Art Expedition program each week from June 7-July 9.

This art camp is designed for children ages 5-13, with children grouped in classes of ages 5-7, 8-10 and 11-13. Camps for 11- to 13-year-olds will be offered June 20-July 9 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Camp for the younger children will be held June 7-18; participants may choose to attend class from 9 a.m.-noon or 1-4 p.m. Younger participants may sign up for morning and afternoon classes to have a daylong experience. Pre-camp from 8-9 a.m. and after-camp from 4-5:30 are also available.

The Summer Art Expedition offers participants the opportunity to learn about art, themselves and the world around them. Age-appropriate activities are based on current exhibitions at the Frist Center and are designed to encourage art-making while stimulating art appreciation, interpretation, expression and imagination. No previous art experience is necessary.

For children ages 5-7 and 8-10, a weeklong session costs $160 for non-Frist Center members and $130 for members. For children ages 11-13, a weeklong session costs $260 for non-Frist Center members and $215 for members. There are discounts for attending more than one session and scholarships are available. The Frist Center for the Visual Arts, located at 919 Broadway in downtown Nashville, is an art exhibition center dedicated to presenting the finest visual art from local, regional, national and international sources in a program of changing exhibitions. Gallery admission to the Frist Center is free for visitors ages 18 and under and to Frist Center members. Frist Center admission for adults is $8.50, $7.50 for seniors and $6.50 for college students with ID. Discounts are offered for groups of 10 or more with advance reservation. The Frist Center is open from 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday with extended hours until 8 p.m. Thursdays. The Frist Center Web site can be accessed at www.fristcenter.org.
