Taylor takes ‘Extreme’ title: Young kickboxer wins at Virginia tourney
Local kickboxing prodigy Herman Taylor added another title to his impressive collection last weekend.
Taylor, a Warren County High School student who has excelled in boxing and kickboxing competitions throughout recent years, won the Eastern Regional World Kick Boxing Association’s “Extreme Kickboxing” event last Saturday night in Richmond, Va.
Competing in the lightweight division, Taylor claimed the title with a first-round knockout win over Virginia’s Allen Archer.
The event, which was taped for television broadcast and is scheduled to be shown sometime in April, utilized “Combat” rules, a method of fighting known for sometimes brutal knockouts. Taylor remarked that he was one of the few fighters participating in the event who didn’t require medical attention — win or lose — after his bout.
With his win, Taylor earned the right to participate in the National Championship Super Matches, which will be held June 19. But the straight A student, who was selected as Warren County High’s Student of the Month for January, has a busy schedule leading up to his June event.
Taylor fought in New Orleans Friday night, and is scheduled to travel to Chattanooga Feb. 14 before competing in another Super Fight in Texas on May 8.
