Summer Reading begins June 3

“Take a Ride on the Reading Railroad” is the theme for Magness Library’s Summer Reading Program, an exciting event that promises lots of fun. Organizers are planning fun-filled activities sure to please youngsters of all ages.

Tentative plans include a puppet show, popcorn and movie, a presentation by the Cookeville Depot Museum and a visit from the Tennessee State Naturalist. All activities of this type will take place in the fellowship hall of First United Methodist Church, located beside the library.

The program will begin with registration June 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Children’s Library. It is open to all children ages 2 to 14 and will focus on books, crafts and special programs about railroads and trains. There will be certificates and prizes for children who participate. The five-week program will end on July 5.

“The main purpose of the Summer Reading Program is, of course, to encourage children to read,” said library manager Mary Robbins. “Reading can be an exciting adventure — and that is what it will be for those children who take a ride on the reading railroad.”

The library will also present a summer reading program for adults, titled “A Mysterious Summer.” The program will begin with registration July 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the library’s main floor and will continue through Aug. 2. It is planned for those ages 15 and above and will focus on mystery and suspense novels. Participants will experience the challenge and fun of solving a mystery and will have an opportunity to meet and talk with a mystery novelist.

Magness Library also welcomes new children’s librarian Cheryl Taylor, who is heartily endorsed by the library manager.

“The children’s library is a very important part of the Magness Library,” said Robbins. “We are very pleased to have an individual with Cheryl’s education and work experience filling the position.”

She is a graduate of Tennessee Technological University with a bachelor’s degree in history. She did graduate work in library science at TTU and worked as a library assistant at Motlow State Community College.

The children’s librarian and staff members are working very hard planning the Summer Reading Program. Taylor will conduct storytime and other special programs, and coordinate activities with schools and day care centers as part of the Magness Library’s Community Outreach Program.
