Boyd sports banquet honors 43

Boyd Christian School honored its athletes Friday night at its annual sports awards banquet, with players from every squad recognized for their contributions this year.

While each of the 43 athletes on the Broncos’ basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, track, tennis and golf teams were recognized for their participation, coaches from each team also bestowed special awards on several players.

The athletic department awarded letters to all the athletes participating in varsity sports, with special recognition to its four-year lettermen.

Emily Hancock, Lindsey Smith, Megan Patterson, Dara Webb and Holly Ferrell were all honored for lettering four years in girls’ basketball, while Josh Webb took home his fourth letter in boys basketball.

Patterson and Dara Webb were also three-year letterwinners in girls’ soccer, while Webb was a four-year letterman in softball. Ferrell took four-year letterman honors in track and softball.

Recognized in middle school girls basketball were: Whitney Nesbitt, spirit award; Abby Surles, most improved; Jordan Cleek, best hustler; Jessica Hagar, defense award; Emily Newby, rebounding award; Hannah Taylor, offense award; Courtney Hard, coach’s award; and Kris Surles, best all-around.

Coach Jeanne Hagar also gave out several awards for middle school boys basketball. Receiving awards were: Ryan Phillips, most improved; Lucas Snyder and Jonathan Hagar, team player awards; James Dunlap, rebounding award; Joey Burton, offense award; Matthew Hancock, defense award; and Dillon Childers, coach’s award and best all-around.

From the Bronco baseball team, awards went to: Jay Medley, defense and steals awards; Sam Medley, pitching and on-base percentage awards; John Watson, infielder award; Cody Perkins, outfielder award; James Dunlap, team spirit award; Dillon Childers, step-up award; and Arne Alberts and Matthew Hancock, most improved.

Coach C.N. Womack presented special awards to seven members of the varsity girls basketball team. Recognized were: Emily Hancock, most dedicated; Dara Webb, defense award; Megan Patterson, rebounding award; Amber Hodge, most versatile; Kati Sutton, most improved; Holly Ferrell, offense award; and Lindsey Smith, most consistent. Ferrell was also recognized for being named all-district.

From the varsity boys basketball team, awards went to: Arne Alberts, most improved; Kenneth King, Bronco spirit award; Casey Hertwig, sixth man award; Clint Patterson, rebound award; Jay Medley, point guard award; Sam Medley, defense award; and Josh Webb, offense award and all-district recognition.

The Lady Bronco soccer team honored: Tabitha King, most improved; Kati Sutton, most goals; Dara Webb and Amber Hodge, defense awards; Megan Hamblen and Megan Patterson, offense awards; Katie Bryant, team spirit; Scarlette Hodge, leadership award; Abbey Barnes, goalkeeper award; and Amanda Love, sportsmanship award. Webb, Hamblen and Sutton all earned all-district honors.

On the boys’ soccer team, awards went to: Chase Hard and Tyler Hall, most improved; John Woodlee, sportsmanship; John Watson, best defense; Arne Alberts, offense award; Eric Phillips, all-around hustle; Clint Patterson, leadership award; and Jay Medley, Sam Medley and Casey Hertwig, all-district awards.

The Lady Bronco softball team recognized: Grace Barnes and Maria Silva, most improved; Scarlette Hodge, leadership award; Dara Webb, most dedicated; Holly Ferrell, most valuable player – offense; Amber Hodge, most valuable player – defense; and Abbey Barnes, best all-around. Amber Hodge, Webb, Ferrell and Barnes received all-district recognition, as well.

Ferrell was recognized for her participation with the Boyd tennis team, as was Maria Silva, who was named to the all-district tournament team.

In track and field, Ferrell and Kati Sutton were honored. Sutton was also recognized for finishing 10th in the regional track meet in long jump competition.

Cheerleading awards handed out Friday went to Anna Tittsworth, 110 percent award; and Megan Hamblen, most talented.
