Rogers, Haston to play among elite: WCHS duo to compete in summer Sunbelt Classics

Glenn Rogers lines a shot to right field during the Pioneers’ first meeting with Cookeville this season.
A pair of Warren County High School baseball players will spend part of their summers competing against some of the nation’s best players.

Junior outfielder Glenn Rogers and sophomore pitcher/ infielder Joey Haston have been selected to compete in the Sunbelt Classic, where they, along with some of the state’s best high school players, will represent Tennessee in national tournaments in Edmond, Okla.

“This is a really big honor for a high school player,” said WCHS baseball coach Jimmy Walker. “They choose the best players from Tennessee, and compete against people from all over North America.”

Rogers, the Pioneers’ starting right fielder this season and team leader in home runs, was selected to the Sunbelt team, members of which are chosen by regional directors of the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association through nominations from coaches and professional scouts.

The team will compete beginning June 6 against squads from Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, Mississippi, California, Canada and Missouri.

Haston, who saw time at third base in addition to his duties on the mound, will take part in the Pre-Sunbelt tourney, for players in ninth- and 10th-grade. That tournament will be held May 31, and June 1-2, and is considered a stepping stone for Team Tennessee in the older Sunbelt Tournament.
