Shelbyville too much for WCHS

The Warren County High School soccer team was shut out on its home field Thursday night, falling to the visiting Shelbyville Golden Eagles 3-0.

“We played a very good team tonight and did a pretty good job matching up with them. Their experience showed in the second half and that made the difference tonight,” said WCHS coach Charlie Hardee.

In the first half the Pioneers matched up very well against Shelbyville. WCHS kept its passing lanes and was able to control the ball for most of the first half.

The Pioneers had the first opportunity to score when Totsura Kusunoki fired a shot, but his effort was stopped by the Eagles goalie.

Shelbyville took momentum, moving the ball downfield, and with 24:08 on the clock fired its first shot. But a diving save by WCHS goalkeeper Matt George kept the game scoreless as the teams went into halftime.

In the second half Shelbyville picked up the pace on offense, and broke the scoreless tie 10 minutes into the period, firing a shot past a diving George.

The Pioneers tried to answer back, but the Eagles intercepted the ball at mid-field and scored their second goal with just under 15 minutes to play.

The Pioneers kept pushing on offense and fired three shots at goal over the next eight minutes, but were turned away each time. The Eagles scored the third and final goal of the night with two minutes left, as the ball skipped just off George’s hands.

The Pioneers had eight shots on goal, with George turning away 10 shots by the Eagles.

“Over all we played very good tonight and I’m very pleased with our kids’ efforts,” Hardee said. “They are still learning and have matured sense the first of the season. The kids are learning from their mistakes, and that’s a positive thing.”

• The Pioneers fell to 3-9 on the season Friday night with a 4-1 loss at Smyrna.

Ben Gretzinger scored the only goal for Warren County, answering the Bulldogs’ Grant Waldron’s second score of the night to cut the SHS lead to 2-1 at the time.

The Pioneers face Blackman at home Tuesday, with junior varsity action at 5 p.m. and the varsity game to follow at 7 p.m.
