Unidentified retail chain eyes McMinnville

GRAY
A nationwide retail chain, which officials hope will help fill the void created by the closing of Kmart, has expressed interest in locating in McMinnville, said industrial recruiter Jim Gray.

Gray made the announcement at the monthly meeting of the Industrial Development Board held Friday at First National Bank.

While saying at this point it would be premature to identify the company by name, he did tell board members the company is a nation-wide retailer and described it as a “multi-entertainment facility.” He added the store sells such products as books, computer software, video games and music. He added the company has a store in Murfreesboro.

“I haven’t talked to the company directly, but I have spoken with their real estate firm in Nashville and they have made it clear to me that this company wants to locate in McMinnville,” said Gray.

Currently, he said, the company’s real estate firm is studying two parcels of land on which they could possibly construct a store – one near Three Star Mall and one near Northgate Shopping Center.

When asked if the company could possibly locate in the soon-to-be-vacated Kmart store in the mall, Gray said the company is aware of Kmart’s soon-to-be departure but that the company usually prefers stand-alone stores.

Concerning possible jobs, he said he hasn’t yet heard how many people the company would employ if it decides to locate here. Gray added it will be awhile longer before he can disclose any more information on the company and its possible move here.
