Learn to live without a swimming pool
This letter concerns two unfortunate ordinances of the city of McMinnville. In an establishment that sells alcohol there can be no dancing or shooting pool. Who would have ever thought this to be the case? This is one ordinance, among one other, I simply do not understand.
The other prohibits skateboarding within the city limits. Ordinance 835 passed in 1991 and regardless of the recent bond voting to provide a pool and a skate park, McMinnville still lacks such a park. I was wondering if the city fathers actually thought skateboarding would fade away? Seems as if this was the plan since no place to skate has been provided.
With this in mind, maybe McMinnville citizens will feel a little how skaters do, since there will be no pool provided. But even still there are alternatives to keep swimmers happy, such as swimming at the lake, in the river or at some crystal-clear country creek.
What alternative does a skater have? Either drive an hour out of town or choose to ride around this town risking tickets issued and/or having our boards confiscated. So to the people wishing there will be a pool, learn to live without one. The skateboarders have had to do this. Why can’t the swimmers!
Sincerely,
Joe Thompson
