Wilson’s run ends at region
Warren County’s final remaining tennis player made a quick exit from the Region 4-AAA tournament Monday in Murfreesboro.
Jacob Wilson, who entered region play as the runner-up from the District 7-AAA tournament, fell to Tullahoma sophomore Halsley Werlein 6-0, 6-1 in their first round match. Werlein was the boys’ singles champion from District 8-AAA, and is ranked No. 16 in the state.
“Jacob had a good chance, but he had several factors against him,” said WCHS coach David Dunlap, who noted that the WCHS senior had battled through tennis elbow during last week’s district tourney, and was also feeling a bit under the weather on Monday.
“But I’m proud of him, because he realized his goal. He had always had the goal of going to the region tournament, and he finally reached it during his senior year.”
The top two players from each district make the region tournament level, with the champions from each region advancing to the state’s final eight.
