Morrison Ruritan praises three outstanding scholars
Ben is the son of Eric and Sussie Durham. Brooke’s parents are Charlie and Angie Hullett and Bill Bowman. As top students at Morrison Elementary, Ben and Brooke each received a $50 savings bond.
In writing about Ben, his teacher, Mr. J.B. Smith, said “I cannot think of a student more deserving of this award. Ben is the ideal student.”
While a member of the Jr. Beta Club, Ben received the Governor’s Award for Peer Tutoring. He also earned the Gateway Award in Algebra as well as breaking a Morrison School record in excelling in reading.
Brooke has attended Morrison School since kindergarten. She served as co-president of the Jr. Beta Club this year. Brooke is active in sports, including basketball and fast-pitch softball. She won the TNT Basketball Honorable Mention Award and has made the county all-stars for two years. She received a Gateway Award and has been a top student throughout her years at Morrison.
Her teacher, Mrs. Curtis, said, “Brooke works very hard to maintain a balance between sports and academics. She has always done a very good job excelling in both.”
Receiving a $600 scholarship from the club was 2005 Warren County High School graduate Leah Cunningham, daughter of Paul and Nancy Cunningham.
Leah ranked in the top 5 percent of her class at Warren County High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Student Council, and Excel Club. She also served on the Student Advisory Board. She was named to Who’s Who Among American High School Students and represented Tennessee at the National Student Leadership Conference. Leah, who plans on majoring in business, will be attending Tennessee Tech.
She attends Temple Baptist Church where she worked on the Christmas Blanket project. A frequent visitor to area nursing homes, she also participates in the Relay for Life and the Walk for a Cure.
The Morrison Ruritan Club joins with Ruritan National in a matching grant program to offer the annual college scholarship. Based on financial need, character, scholarship, academic promise, and desire, this scholarship is given annually to an outstanding student from the Morrison area. It is one way Ruritans encourage and support higher education. The local club has been giving this scholarship to a deserving student since 1992.
The Morrison Ruritan Club is dedicated to improving the community and building a better America through fellowship, goodwill, and community service. Continuing the emphasis on the youth of the community the club currently has 420 youth on 35 teams in co-ed slow pitch softball at the ball field in Morrison.
