The sound of the door shutting behind you combined with the sinking feeling you just left your keys in the ignition are reasons to get acquainted with your new best friend ‘ the locksmith.

‘Usually it’s folks just getting in a hurry and forgetting to take their keys with them,’ said Jim Cunningham of Jim’s Locksmith who says about half his work involves opening doors for people who locked their keys inside. ‘It pretty well can happen to anybody at one time or another and sometimes there’s just not another key handy.’

Jim has been working in the locksmith business for about eight years, operating his service 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

‘I’m always on duty and sometimes there are calls late at night,’ Jim said. ‘A lot of times these are folks who work second and third shift who lock themselves out of their vehicles or sometimes get home to find out they’ve locked themselves out of their house.’

Jim said gaining entry to lock outs requires the right tools and know-how to manipulate the lock system. He also carries machinery to make keys on premises inside his ‘shop on wheels’ which he drives to calls.

In addition to helping people who lock themselves out, Jim also helps people lock others out by offering an array of lock systems, commercial and residential.

‘Something which is real popular is having lock systems which all operate with one key,’ Jim said. ‘Deadbolts are very popular because people are very security minded now, so providing a way to use one key for every lock is what people want.’
