New racquetball courts possible for Civic Center

McMinnville Civic Center is looking into adding two courts that can be used to play racquetball and handball, as well as several other court activities.

The idea is being spearheaded by Ray Marlow, retired businessman and avid handball player, who recently moved to the Rock Island area and is currently enjoying the activities available at the Civic Center.

“The Civic Center is a very nice facility,” said Marlow. “My wife, MaryLou, and I really like it. It offers something for young children to older people. I want to see what I can do about encouraging adding hard-court activities.”

An added benefit to adding hardball activities, says Marlow, is improving hand-to-eye coordination and it is something in which all age groups can participate.

“It is a really go activity,” said Marlow. “I hope to encourage the community and hopefully some racquetball players. With two courts, you could attract some tournaments here, increase business for the area.”

Plans were originally drawn up in 2004 to use the south balcony but the funding was never available. The added courts will cost $80,000.

“We just need to know if the community would want to do this,” said Greg Wanamaker, assistant director of Parks and Recreation. “There have been different plans throughout the years to figure out a way to put some courts in here. This is the best one yet. We want to encourage Mr. Marlow’s idea.”
