Unbeaten Eagles beat Boyd’s boys

The Boyd Broncos traveled to Spencer Tuesday night in hopes of playing the role of spoiler. The Van Buren County Eagles put their District 9-A undefeated streak on the line, but the Broncos couldn’t pull off the upset as they fell by a 64-40 final.

The Broncos dropped to 0-10 in district play and 5-17 on the season.

Justin Smith helped to lead the Eagles to a 21-point first quarter. The Broncos’ offense struggled with just two baskets in the opening period and trailed by 17 by the end of the period.

Second-quarter action didn’t get much better for Boyd, as once again two baskets would be all the Broncos could manage. Van Buren’s Darrin Baker, with the help of Matthew Rigsby and Smith put 16 points on the board to take a 37-8 lead at the break.

Boyd turned things around on offense in the third period, but the Broncos defense still had problems keeping the Eagles offense contained. Boyd out-scored the Eagles 20-19, but Van Buren still held the lead by the end of the period at 56-28.

In the final period both teams had problems finding the bottom of the basket. The Broncos out scored Van Buren 12-8, but it was too little too late as the Eagles remain undefeated in district action.

For the Broncos, Tyler Hillis netted 14 points. Casey Myers had eight, Lucas Majors added seven, Mitchell Young netted five, Lance Chandler had four and Cole Stubblefield added two points.

Smith led all scorers with 14 points for the Eagles. Baker added 10, Colton Simmons had nine, Rigsby hit for seven, Alex Farris had six, Wesley Wheeler had four, Ethan Hillis, Sheldon Hitchcock and Dakota Seamons had three points apiece and Tyler Walling had one point.

The Broncos will be in action tonight at home against Forrest.
