Magness to hold Valentine jazz concert-Dudleys to perform at library
Valentine’s Day is traditionally a time to celebrate romance, with starry-eyed suitors offering gifts of flowers and candy to their lady-loves, but there’s another wonderful way to engender a truly romantic mood for couples of all ages, the gift of music.
That’s why Magness Library will be holding a special Valentine’s Evening Jazz Concert on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. in the library’s Carrier Community Room featuring husband-and-wife duo Bruce and Sandra Dudley.
A reception will precede the concert at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Arts in the Library Programs presented throughout the year at Magness Library.
Seating is limited, so please make reservations early. Tickets are now on sale at the library.
Jazz vocalist Sandra Dudley, accompanied by her husband, jazz pianist Bruce Dudley, will be performing a wide variety of jazz standards from the American Songbook. Songs from such composers as Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer will be featured. Bruce and Sandra have been performing jazz together for over two decades, and are professors of commercial music at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.
The couple’s repertoire includes standards such as ‘My Funny Valentine,’ ‘The Shadow of Your Smile,’ ‘The Very Thought of You,’ ‘Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars,’ ‘Night and Day,’ ‘Close to You,’ and ‘Sunday Kind of Love.’
Sandra has sung with many jazz ensembles including The Nelson Riddle Orchestra, The Jazz Orchestra of the Delta, and the Tennessee Jazz Orchestra. Sandra has been the featured soloist with the Nashville and Memphis Symphonies, the Murfreesboro Youth Orchestra, and has been heard on American Public Radio, National Public Radio, and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
Jazz pianist and composer Bruce Dudley has performed at Jazz Festivals in Canada and the United States since 1974 when he was the featured ‘Young Talent’ winner at the Wichita Jazz Festival. Since then he has performed across Canada and throughout the United States in clubs, concerts, and festivals including the Houston International Festival, Vancouver Jazz Festival, Jazz in June, Calgary Jazz Festival, Edmonton Jazz Festival, and Corpus Christi Jazz Festival.
He has performed with Herb Ellis, Marvin Stamm, Eddie Daniels, Chester Thompson, Jamie Baum, along with many other jazz music notables, and was the pianist for the Middle Tennessee Jazz Orchestra.
Be sure to come out and enjoy a romantic evening of Valentine’s music featuring the performances of this talented duo. For more information on this presentation, contact Magness Library at 473-2428.
