Riverdale reigns over WCHS-Lady Warriors use speed to build big lead
Monday night in the Charlie Dalton gym the Lady Pioneer freshman squad ran into trouble when they took on the Lady Warriors of Riverdale.
Latawphia Weeden led Riverdale with 18 points, as all seven Lady Warriors entered their names in the scorebook in a 56-19 win.
Riverdale jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first period as Weeden and Quiann Dalton had one 3-pointer each. Christian Johnson hit from the paint for the Lady Pioneers at the 1:55 mark. Weeden added another basket for the Lady Warriors and just before the period ended Laura Beth McKinley added a basket for Warren County. At the end of the first quarter Riverdale held a 16-4 lead.
All three of Warren County’s points in the second period came from the free-throw line. Kailey Kominos hit two-of-two and McKinley hit the front end of a one-and-one. Warren County couldn’t stop Riverdale’s running offense as Hannah Scott and Ashley Henry laid in a pair of baskets each to give their team a 25-7 lead at the break.
Riverdale’s quickness once again proved to be too much for the Lady Pioneers in the third period. The Lady Warriors scored 10 of their 18 points in the period off of fast breaks.
Warren County got a pair of baskets from McKinley, including a 3-pointer, but at the end of the quarter Riverdale had built a 43-15 advantage.
In the final period, Henry hit a 3-pointer for the Lady Warriors to get things started. Johnson answered when she drove the paint for Warren County’s first basket in the period, but the Lady Warriors were unstoppable during the final four minutes of play. Dalton hit a 3-pointer and before time ran off the clock, Riverdale added seven more points to the board. Ashley Ashburn had the Lady Pioneers’ only other basket in the period as Warren County fell by 37 points.
For the Lady Pioneers McKinley had eight points, Johnson had five, Kominos, Sarah Collins and Ashburn had two points each.
Weeden had 18 for Riverdale, followed by Henry with 15. Dalton added 10, Catie Bryan had six, Scott had four, Hali BoLand added two and Lauren Cantrell had one point.
The Lady Pioneers will be at home on Thursday to take on Cookeville.
