New fitness program to promote eWellness-Kick off is Monday at Senior Center
The Senior Center and local UT Extension office are partnering to present an eWellness Program designed to help the community improve its health through educational classes and wellness challenges. The kickoff will be at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Senior Center, located at 809 Morrison Street.
After the kickoff, the program will be held each Monday at 9:30 a.m. April 6 through May 30 and is completely free of charge.
According to extension agent Hilda W. Lytle, the program is moving into the computer age.
‘It is called eWellness because part of the program is done on the computer online,’ Lytle said. ‘That’s the ‘e’ part of it. On the Web site it says ‘eWellness is designed to help you make small changes that become healthy habits.’
Lytle says the program is aimed at people of all ages.
‘We are partnering with the Senior Center,’ Lytle said. ‘But anyone can attend. It’s not just for seniors.’
For those who don’t have computer access at home, there are computers available at the Senior Center.
‘The overall goal is to encourage people be healthier by eating more fruits and vegetables and getting more fiber in their diets,’ Lytle said. ‘We’re going to have seven weeks of classes culminating in an evaluation of their progress in May.’
The wellness challenges will include the following:
‘ Eating fruits and vegetables
‘ Drinking water or un-sweetened beverages
‘ Doing physical activity
There will also be an optional weekly weigh-in for those who want to make weight loss a part of the program.
‘We hope everyone will come out and join us in this fun and educational program,’ Lytle said. ‘Even if they miss the kickoff program they can still sign up through April 4.’
