Lady Pioneers struggle at plate, fall to Siegel in district matchup-WCHS held to just three hits

After collecting 11 hits against White County on Monday, the bats went cold for the Lady Pioneers Thursday night against Siegel.

Warren County managed just three hits against Lady Star pitcher Kristen Parker as Siegel rolled past Warren County 9-0 at the WCHS softball field in District 7-AAA action.

Siegel improved to 4-0 in district play as Warren County dropped to 2-3.

Shelby Knowles got the start for the Lady Pioneers, working three innings and allowing five runs on six hits, while fanning three and walking one. Kaitom Tanner worked four innings in relief, giving up four runs on five hits,

Parker picked up the win for Siegel, allowing just three hits, while striking out 10 and giving up three walks on the night.

In the top of the first Siegel went down in order. The Lady Pioneers tried to put the first run on the board in the bottom of the inning, when Katie Rogers singled with two outs, but Parker caught the next Lady Pioneer looking to end the inning.

Siegel was determined to push a run across the plate in the top of the second after Becca Williams started things off with a single to left field. Williams swiped second and then third putting her in scoring position with one out. Abby Thomas executed the squeeze play to perfection, which scored Williams and then stole second after making it safe to first. The next two batters for the Lady Stars dropped bunts down, which scored one more run to give Siegel a 2-0 lead. Parker helped her cause with a two RBI singled. A bunt moved the runner into scoring position with two outs. A throwing error on a bunt scored Parker to give Siegel a 5-0 advantage before Warren County got out of the inning.

Warren County went down one-two-three in their half of the inning.

Siegel made it a 6-0 game in the top of the third, after a lead off walk and then a RBI double by Sara Dusenberry.

In the top of the fourth Parker drew a one-out walk, and back-to-back bunts loaded the bases. A walk scored one run, which was followed by a two RBI single from Dusenberry that put Siegel on top 9-0 before Warren County got out of the inning. Once again the Lady Pioneer went down in order in the bottom of the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth Bethni McGuire singled with one out, but the next two Lady Pioneers went down swinging to end the inning.

Siegel threaten in the top of the seventh when Dusenberry doubled to left-center with one out and Stephanie Byrn singled. The next batter popped out to left and the runner at second was doubled up to end the inning.

The Lady Pioneers tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh when Kayley Murray doubled to lead things off. But the Lady Stars defense recorded the next three batters to end the game and any hopes of a Warren County victory.

Murray, Rogers and McGuire had one hit each for Warren County, which returns to the diamond Monday with a road trip to face Murfreesboro Oakland.
