Johnson leads WCMS girls over Gators
The Lady Pioneer middle school varsity basketball team improved to 8-3 in Central Tennessee Conference play Thursday night. Warren County Middle traveled to Franklin County North and rolled past the Lady Gators 35-16 with the help of a 12-point night by Taylor Johnson.
Warren County’s offense struggled in the opening period as Kara Dishman had the only basket for the Lady Pioneers. The Lady Gators had offensive problems of their own. Elizabeth Winton and Katlyn Payne had one basket each to give their team a 4-2 lead.
Payne scored the Lady Gators only basket in the second period with a 3-pointer. Warren County’s offense finally got on track with a 10 point quarter. Kelsie Douglas and Morgan Frye netted two baskets each to help the Lady Pioneers take a 12-7 lead at the break.
Third-period action saw Hannah McDonald net a 3-pointer as part of Franklin County’s six points. Bree Smith scored four points for the Lady Pioneers as Johnson and Frye added one basket each for part of Warren County’s nine points.
In the final period Courtney Coroland had the Lady Gators only basket with a 3-pointer. Johnson took the game over in the final period netting four baskets and two points from the free throw line. Sarah Jacobs and Frye added one basket each to help secure the win.
For Warren County, Johnson led with 12 followed by Frye with eight, Smith and Douglas added five points each. Deason and Jacobs had two points each and Megan Dishman added one point.
Payne led the Lady Gators with six points.
