Lady Broncos clinch 2nd in District 9-A
The Lady Bronco softball team finished District 9-A action Thursday afternoon at Boyd Christian with a 6-2 win over Community High School.
With the win Boyd wrapped up second place in district competition and improved its record to 9-3.
Cassie Wanamaker picked up the win for the Lady Broncos, giving up just two hits and fanning 15 of the 27 batters she faced.
In the bottom of the first inning the Lady Broncos got a leadoff single from Lyndsey King and Courtney Hard followed with a walk. Kris Surles connected for a single up the middle, scoring two runs before Community got out of the inning.
The Viqueens had a chance to score in the top of the fourth after Meaghan Therren started things off with a single. Wanamaker struck out the next batter before giving up a walk to Amanda Joslyn. Wanamaker then fanned the next two batters to end the inning.
Up 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Boyd padded its lead with four runs crossing the plate. Hard got things going with a leadoff walk. Wanamaker followed with a one-out single, then Leah Walker singled and drove in Hard and Wanamaker. Tosha Young singled and with two outs Ashley Bain drove in Walker and Young as Boyd took a 6-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth the Viqueens narrowed the lead after putting two runs on the board. Two walks and a two-RBI single from Joslyn made it a 6-2 game, but Boyd got out of the inning without any further damage.
Wanamaker struck out the side in the top of the seventh to give Boyd the district win.
For the Lady Broncos, Megan Boren had two hits followed by King, Hard, Wanamaker, Walker, Young and Bain with one hit each.
Boyd will be in action on Monday to take on Upperman at home, in a game which will feature a Senior Day celebration.
